MTB - Platform Redesign

Redesign the platform for a forward-thinking company that connects investors with startups. The goal was to minimize reported user frictions and give the platform a much-needed modern, refreshed look.

My role

Research: Identified key user pain points to guide a friction-reducing redesign.

Wireframing: Built wireframes to streamline user flows and improve usability.

Design System: Developed a cohesive design system for consistent and scalable visuals.

Team

I led the project in direct collaboration with MTB's Product Team, with help from GlueGlue's Product Design Manager (Fabian Niederkofler).

We began with a comprehensive walkthrough of the platform to identify all features and start our evaluation.

The platform’s core feature allows investors to create challenges (requests for specific technologies they are interested in funding) enabling startups to apply with their solutions.

The web-app was built with a mix of React libraries, leading to an outdated appearance and lack of cohesive UI.

Pages were scattered, with inconsistent navigation throughout the platform.

The process for creating a startup challenge was confusing and difficult for users to understand.

Our first step was to map all platform features and design a new information architecture, considering its three user types: investors, startups, and institutions, each requiring a tailored experience.

With no direct competitors, we analyzed deal management platforms like Pipedrive for inspiration.

A Kanban view provides a clear overview and allows for quick movement of cards between different steps.

The absence of a table or list view can be a drawback, especially when there are numerous cards in each step.

Based on our findings, we created all the wireframes to align with our stakeholders on the platform's navigation and interaction design.

Once we aligned on the UX, I developed a simple yet effective design system for building the UI, as all pages were constructed using the same components.

The design system enabled me to efficiently create all the high-fidelity pages, resulting in a consistent and modern design across the platform.

Impact

The redesign of the platform yielded significant positive outcomes, leading to a remarkable 53% increase in user retention and a 15% rise in investor sign-ups during the first 3 months. These enhancements not only improved user engagement but also attracted a broader audience of investors, effectively strengthening the platform's ecosystem. This success demonstrates the impact of thoughtful design on user experience and highlights the platform's value in connecting startups and investors.

Key learnings

This project highlighted the importance of aligning user experience with business goals.

I gained valuable insights into the effectiveness of a cohesive design system for streamlining workflows and maintaining consistency. Collaborating with the company underscored the need to understand diverse user needs, reinforcing that tailored solutions are crucial for success.
